the history of my hair – part 1

Long and kinky,

Ribbons and bows accessorize my nappy hair

Tightly sculptured cornrows and braids;

a pain I endured for convenience sake.

Advancing technology straightens and softens;

I find no longer the need to use my afro comb.

Sleek and groomed the hairstyle hides well;

the scars were relaxant burnt into my scalp.

Hairdresser’s tongs, become an addictive necessity;

this hair dictates too many lifestyle choices.

Frustrated by dependence,

I accept its coarseness and unearth the beauty of my natural tresses.
